Women’s Wheelchair Basketball League moves into fourth and final round

Finals are around the corner (10-12 September) and with home-side favourites Sydney University Wheelchair Flames holding top spot on percentage only, Perth Western Star, led by Amber Merritt and Cobi Crispin, will have the chance to snatch the minor premiership heading into the finals weekend with a good showing in round four.

They won’t have to wait long to do it either, with the two league-leaders facing off in the opening clash of the weekend at 2pm on Friday afternoon.

Following that game is the clash of the bottom two sides, Goudkamp Gladiators and Victorian Dandenong Rangers. This is an important meeting as well. With both sides still a chance of an upset when the finals roll around, getting off to a strong start in round four will be critical. Expect the likes of Kylie Gauci of the Gladiators and Leanna Del Toso of the Rangers to fire up.

Saturday sees the reverse, where the League’s bottom two sides will be put to the ultimate test against the League leaders. The Victorian Dandenong Ranges do battle with the Sydney Uni Wheelchair Flames at 5pm and will be desperate to prove that they have plenty to offer come September. At 7pm, the Goudkamp Gladiators clash with Western Star, rounding out a big night of Wheelchair basketball action, a prelude to a jam-packed third and final day.

The best value for money comes on Sunday, with four big clashes being kicked off with the second-versus-third encounter between the Victorian Dandenong Rangers and Perth Western Star at 8am. Western Star won’t have long to recover: they’re back on court at 10am to clash with Goudkamp Gladiators.  They can then relax and watch their top-of-the-table counterpart do battle in the two remaining contests: first against the Victorian Dandenong Rangers at 12 and then against Goudkamp at 2pm.

The girls will leave nothing on the floor in the final round of competition as championship glory beckons. Who will go into the finals on top, favourites to win it all?
