Under 18 Women: Division 1 Champions
Millicent win div 1 under 18 girls South Australian Country title.
It has been a long time coming for this group of girls but the hard work has finally paid off as Millicent takes out the U18 women's Division 1 Junior State Championships in Adelaide over the long weekend.
With a tough draw Millicent won all their minor round games by 4 points.
Finishing top in our pool, we crossed over to played 4th placed Yorke Valley from pool A, a great team effort by all players with every player scoring we came home with an easy 21 point win.
Meeting Whyalla again in the semi we knew what we were up against and the players we had to shut down. Whyalla play a very tight zoned game and a great offensive game as well and in the previous game had got a great start against us. We finally got off to a great start against them and were only 1 down at quarter time, with some great work under the basket by Sally Houlihan and driving by Alex walker we were able to get ahead and by 3 at half time and then hold our 3 point lead at quarter time. The last quarter saw Whyalla come back at us but we were able to hold on and win by 1 point to advance to the Grand Final.
Our opponents to be in the grand final were going to be Great Southern, which we hadn’t met in the previous rounds but had played in previous tournaments and had very close games with and new we were in for a tough fought game. Our strategy was to hit the boards fast and with great running of the floor we got the head start we needed by outscoring great southern by 7 points in the first quarter. The girls continued to press hard and run the ball and we increase our lead to be up at half time by 15 points with Sarah Allan and Alex Walker driving hard to the basket. Knowing that great southern had some good outside shooters we couldn’t take the foot off the pedal for a second. Our girls fitness shone through as we continued to wear great southern down and with outstanding work by our entire team we increased our lead by 19 at 3 quarter time and then went on to win the Grand Final by 16 points.
