Millicent Junior Tournament Success

Hundreds of Millicent Basketballers, business operators and volunteers would have slept well last night after the record breaking basketball tournament.

Over the weekend, the Millicent Junior Basketball Tournament was held, with 12 Millicent Magic underage teams taking on 65 teams from as far away as Adelaide.

The games were played at five venues in Millicent as well as the Beachport Recreation Centre and required a mini-army of umpires, scorers, caterers, clean up crews and court supervisors to make sure the event ran smoothly.

All available accommodation in Millicent and beyond was booked solid for the duration of the weekend. While a number of Millicent businesses decided to extend their trading hours to cope with the visitors. The Basketball volunteers were very busy catering for the visitors as well as the fast food outlets Subway and Red Rooster.

The Millicent teams all performed fairly well with the under 12 boys div 1 and the div 2 under 16 girls winning and the under 18 div 2 men and 18 div 1 women both playing off in grand finals.

The U12 Magic Boys won all 5 of the games they played over the weekend and dominated their competition with big margins in all games. Coach Michael Schultz was impressed with the way the boys played with great team work, making accurate passes, playing fantastic defense, and keeping calm under pressure which allowed all players to score. The Magic Boys played Hamilton in the grand final, winning the game 48 to 16.

During their minor round games, the Magic had a one point win over Great Southern, a 22 point win over the Mt Gambier B side and a 14 point win against Naracoorte. Under the guidance of ‘fill in coach’ Keith Allan, the girls showed control and tenacity over the weekend. Grand Final result, Millicent 28 defeated by Mt Gambier A 50.

The under 18 Men won 1 their first minor round game against Naracoorte by 5 points, then lost their second game to Warrnambool Green by 5 points and were soundly defeated by Mt Gambier in their 3rd game. This saw the boys finish 3rd in their pool, which put them into the Division 2 play offs.

The boys had a thriller of a Semi Final against Warrnambool White winning by 1 point. The win came about because of their pressure defence in the last quarter, keeping their opposition to just 4 points in the quarter, while scoring 10 themselves.

The semi-final victory put Millicent in the Grand Final where they came up against a classy Great Southern outfit. Millicent stayed with Great Southern until early in the 3rd quarter, but the fatigue from the previous game started to show and Great Southern finished the game as comfortable winners.
