Magic Perform Well at Murray Bridge Tournament

The winning under 14 Division 2 boys, Josh Levison, Bailey Murphy, Doug Treloar, Matt Withers, Max Telfer, Tanner Stewart, Will Bowering and Hamish McRae. The boys started well winning both their pool games on the Saturday with all team members contributing strongly. The next day, full of confidence and keen to pick up top spot the boys played strongly and came up with a good win to set up top spot in our side of the draw. The cross over final was played in the afternoon and after withstanding a physical game from Great Southern a win was recorded. This set the Magic boys for a Semi-final game against Woodville who had been playing well all weekend. The boys got off to a shaky start and were down by 11 points at half time, but were kept in the game by Bailey and Josh rebounding well. After half time Magic clawed back the lead with Josh Levison playing extremely well and he was assisted by Tanner, Max and Hamish to eventual win by 12 points.

The grand final was between Magic and the Strathalbyn Storm. The Storm were a big tall team and they looked very confident, however they struggled against an inform Josh Levison and coupled with good defence Magic were up by 6 points at the half time break. The game see sawed through the third with strong play by Matt, & Will combining with big boards by Josh and Doug keeping them ahead of the Storm. The last quarter saw us hold and slowly extend our lead with the Storm getting into foul trouble and Doug and Josh made them pay at the foul line. Magic won the Grand final by 9 points.

The under 14 girls div 1 played some really good basketball over the weekend being competitive in all games only losing to Mt Gambier in both the minor round and the Grand Final. The team was Lauren Fensom, Keely Venn, Emily Winter, Caitlyn Shanks, Alana Craig, Ashleigh Sorrell and Madison Turner with all players contributing throughout the weekend. In the Grand Final the Magic girls stayed with their opponents Mt Gambier Lakers until half time with the team working hard in defence. Unfortunately the defence didn’t transfer in to offence and after the break Magic really struggled to score which cost them and Lakers ran out comfortable winners.

The div 2 14 girls also had an outstanding weekend with Isabella Turner leading the way, winning 4 of the 6 games. The girls played good basketball during the weekend against Eastern Hills, Strathalbyn, Victor Harbour and Mt Gambier. The team consisted of Isabella Turner, Jess and Chloe Venn, Emma Gould, Sophie Wallis, Macey Taylor, Megan Freeman and Mellissa Tilly. They won the semi- final by 2 points after being down for most of the game. During the weekend Sophie Wallis and Emma Gould had some big challenges against some bigger stronger players but both acquitted themselves very well along with Chloe Venn and Megan Freeman but it was the new members of the town team competition in Macey and Mellissa who showed they will be solid contributors moving forward.

The under 12 boys div 2 made the Grand Final but just couldn’t find a consistent scorer in the final to get the win but everyone tried extremely hard and coaches and parents were very proud of their performance. Over the weekend the boys won all 5 games before the final with many players having outstanding 1st tournament performances. The team played Woodville, Eastern Hills, Victor Harbour and York Valley.   The team consisted of Callan McGrath, Connall Schultz, James Lucas, Mason Galwey, Riley Shanks, Austin Fuller, Cooper Pratt, Jack Wilson and Michael Stupple.

The under 16 girls performed well over the weekend winning 1 game and being competitive in 3 of the 4 other games they played over the weekend. The group had a fairly inexperienced team but showed by the end of the weekend that they had improved.

The under 16 boys started the weekend on fire with 2 wins against Strathalbyn and York Valley. The boys then played Woodville in the last minor round game on Sunday where they went down by 13 points. Woodville had 2, 6’6” boys who caused them a lot of trouble getting the ball. The next game was a cross over game against Eastern Hills who were a pretty classy side but our boys were competitive but struggled to find a consistent scorer.

The under 18 men played 5 games for the weekend and were very competitive winning 1 game and narrowly losing 2 others in the last minutes of the games but were out classed in the remaining 2 games.

The 18 women’s team had an indifferent 1st up tournament not recording a win and struggling to get their game together but they were getting better as the weekend came to a close. Sarah Allan, Reanna Wetherall and Sally Houlihan were the team’s leading scorers for the weekend.

The next event for Magic is our own Tournament in Millicent on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st October. All 12 Millicent Magic teams will be competing against teams from Mt Gambier, Victor Harbour, Murray Bridge, Adelaide, Bordertown, Naracoorte, Mt Barker, Portland, Horsham, Hamilton, Warrnambool and Pt Fairy. The Millicent tournament will have 77 teams competing which will be the biggest event yet.
