The girls played some fantastic basketball and their passing all over the court was great to watch. In all games they had lots of rules on them from their coach and it was a great opportunity to practice their team plays. We played in the spirit of the game and the girls still couldn’t be stopped. The team had a wonderful approach to each game and had respected for all the teams they played. We played 6 games over the weekend and a very early start on Sunday and all 7 girls played strong and great team basketball and dominated the tournament from game 1 to the grand final. Well done girls.

UNDER 12 GIRLS Portland Tournament

GAME 1 V Ararat

We started and finished this game very strong, which was great to see for the first game of tournament. Great defence all over the court which made it hard for Ararat to score. Passing in offence was excellent.

I Turner 22, J Venn 10, M Freeman 6, E Winter 6, E Gould 6, M Varcoe 2, S Wallis 2.

FINAL SCORE – 58 to 6

GAME 2 V Hamilton

Once again we played hard defence and dominated on the score board. Our shooting of the backboard has improved. Still need to box out under the basket, but still strong rebounding from Emily Winter and Izzy Turner.

E Winter 14, I Turner 11, Jess Venn 8, C Venn 4, E Gould 2.

FINAL SCORE – 35 to 21

GAME 3 V Mt Gambier

A great game of basketball from both sides. Izzy Turner and Emily Winter were very strong at both ends of the court. Jess and Chloe Venn were great in defence along with their passing in offence. A great team game under a lot of pressure.

I Turner 12, E Winter 5, J Venn 2, C Venn 2, M Freeman 2.

FINAL SCORE – 23 to 20

GAME 4 V Warrnambool

This game wasn’t a great game to watch, far too physical for an u12 game. Warrnambool were very aggressive to the ball and player. Our girls to their credit played kept playing their own game and got over the line, without to many injuries.

E Winter 10, J Venn 5, I Turner 4, E Gould 4, M Freeman 2.

FINAL SCORE – 25 to 11

GRAND FINAL V Mt Gambier

The game started very even and continued all game. Emily Winter and Izzy Turner once again were very strong rebounding. Jess and Chloe Venn taking the ball to the basket kept us in the game. Sophie Wallis and Megan Freeman in the dying minutes of the game were fantastic in defence and finding their player and turning the ball over when it was needed. Tayla Werchon, Emma Gould and Macey Varcoe passing around the court was great to watch. Well done to all the girls and great job all weekend.

FINAL SCORE – 23 to 21

Under 14 Girls Div 2

Millicent 17 - Portland 29

Millicent 13 - Port Fairy 19

Millicent 7 - Ararat 37

Millicent 16 - Port Fairy 22

Interesting tournament girls. We were very competitive for most of the weekend with some outstanding defence. We must work on our passing and getting that ball down the court quicker as we certainly can not rely on our height. We were generally smaller than the other teams but certainly put up a good fight. Good effort and some really great team work. A very big THANK YOU to Leah Puiatti who coached for the weekend in Tony’s absence.

Well done to the Div 2 team who ended up crossing over into Div 1 after Saturday’s games. There were some very excited boys who thought they could end up playing our Div 1 boys in the Grand Final until both our under 12 boys teams lost to Naracoorte and Horsham, so ended up playing each other in the Div 1 Consolation Final. Naracoorte and Horsham played off for the Div 1 prize.

Great game both teams, we had the Div 1 team worried for a while!
