SA Country Under 14 and Under 18 Champinships wrap up

On the 12th, 13th and 14th March, 5 Millicent magic teams participated in the SA Country Championships held in Adelaide.

The Magic teams who took part were the Under 18 women who played in Division 1, the Under 18 men who played in Divison 2, the Under 14 girls who had a team in Division 1 and another team in Division 3 and the Under 14 boys who played in Division 2.

The under 18 womens team had a sensational start to the weekend, defeating Murray Bridge in their opening game but lost later in the day to Port Augusta. The girls rallied together and came out strong the next day to defeat Riverland. The team finished 2nd in their section and played the cross over final against Whyalla. The Magic girls won the game which saw them go into the semi final against Mount Gambier on the Monday morning. Unfortunately they lost the semi final, seeing them finish 3rd for the weekend.  Coach Peter Seebohm was pleased with the teams efforts and said that the girls excelled in patches throughout the weekend and were unlucky to not reach the final.

The under 18 mens team were defeated by Mildura in their first game of the weekend and also went down against Yorke Valley later in the day. They came up against Port Pirie on the Sunday and were successful. They played Port Lincoln later that night but were defeated. This saw the team go into the semi final on the Monday. The boys played against Port Lincoln in the semi and went down by 10 points, finishing 4th for the weekend. Coach Jimmy Fleming was pleased with the effort of his players over the weekend.

The under 14 boys team played Port Lincoln in their first game of the weekend. The team got off to a slow start, but played a terrific 3rd quarter, but were unable to gain a lead in the game. In the second game of the weekend the boys played against Mildura. This was a thriller of a game with the leader undecided until the last quarter. The boys worked well as a team and were victorious by 8 points. On Sunday the team played against Riverland but were unsuccessful. This saw them finish 3rd in their section which put them into a cross over final against Barossa Valley. The team gave their best effort in the game, but were not able to match the height of the Barossa Valley boys and were knocked out of the finals. Coach Jenny Herbert was very pleased with the way the boys played and worked as a team and said she can see improvement in every one of her players.

The Under 14 Div 1 girls played their first game of the weekend against Port Lincoln and went down by 3 points. The second game was a tough one against Yorke Valley and the girls were unsuccessful. On Sunday morning the girls came up against Whyalla. After a slow start in the first quarter, the team rallied together and won the game by 9 points. In their 4th game, the Magic girls played against Eastern Hills. This was another close game but unfortunately the girls were unsuccessful. The girls finished third in their section which saw them go into the cross over final against Mt Gambier. They were unable to get a win and were knocked out of the finals. Coach Fiona Telfer said she was very pleased with the way her girls approached the weekend.

The under 14 Div 3 girls played their first game for the weekend against Great Southern. The girls took a little while to get organised, but once they got into the game had an easy victory. Their second game for the weekend was against Murray Bridge and once again the Magic girls were too strong for the opposition. On Sunday they played against Port Pirie. This was a much closer game, but the girls finished 11 points in front. The next game was against Roxby Downs. The team found themselves in foul trouble early in the game, but once they settled down and stopped the long passes made by the opposition they were able to build a good lead and ended the game 23 points in front. The girls finished top of their section and played the cross over final against Riverlnd on the Monday morning. The girls had a solid win in this game, moving into the semi finals. The team came up against Roxby Downs in the semi final and had another good win. In the grand final the Magic girls played against Naracoorte. Naracoorte had an 8 point lead on the scoreboard early in the game, but the Magic girls worked hard and played good team basketball to get themselves a 1 point lead in the last couple of minutes of the game. It was an extremely close battle for the dying minutes with Naracoorte finishing the game 1 point in front. The final score was 31 - 32 in Naracoorte's favour. Coach Peter Seebohm was extremely pleased with the effort of all players over the weekend. He said the team is a very exciting group as every player is bottom age, has so much potential and will be able to play under 14s again next year.

Daniel Tredrea, Meg Fennell, Henry Wallis and Joe Brooks represented Millicent as referees over the weekend.

The under 12 and 16 teams will play their country championship on the weekend of 26th and 27th March. Millicent will have 6 Magic teams travel to Adelaide for the event.
