A Word From Hawks Captain Ben Purser
It took a gutsy, determined effort to overcome the Mandurah Magic in two games last weekend after dropping the first game of the best of three series. We got back to playing the kind of defence we’ve prided ourselves on all year, holding a proud Magic squad to 88 points in game two and 74 in the game three decider. AJ Majstrovich was outstanding for us in both games over the weekend but special mention must go to his epic game 3 performance – playing all 48 minutes in the second game of a double header, scoring 27pts (also grabbing 10 boards) and spending much of the night guarding man-mountain Taylor Mullenax. It was a truly herculean effort by the savvy veteran. Needless to say he was on light duties at training during the week.
We will need the same commitment at the defensive end if we’re to beat the Wanneroo Wolves in our semi final match up. Last weekend the Wolves finished off a 2-0 series sweep over the Geraldton Buccaneers, a team many picked as a strong chance to win it all this year. Riding the hot form of Trian Illiadis and Seb Salinas, the Wolves possess a potent offensive squad capable of putting up big numbers on any given night.
The challenge this series will be to neutralise these offensive threats while maintaining a confident, attacking style of play at our end. The support at last weekend’s games was truly fantastic! The home court advantage helped us get across the line against the Magic.
It would be great to see our Hawks fans head north to Joondalup stadium tonight and then a repeat the following week at our home game would be AMAZING!!
