Game Night - Scorebench

Team Hawks have a cast of amazing people who work behind the scenes each and every week, ensuring our home games are professional and entertaining events. In this quarterfinals edition of our program, we’re throwing the spotlight on our wonderful scorebench team; checking in with coordinator Margaret Wright.

Who are the wonderful Team Hawks Scorebench Regulars? I’ve been doing it for over 25 years. Then the rest of the team:Sharon (Shazza) Spinner: 20 years+

Marian Keighley: 25 years+ Tania Trengove: 10 years+   Peta Gardiner: 15 years+ and Mardy Perret. Marcia Tilbury & Eleanor Duff – help out with Hawks games as well as East Perth. Marcia had kids come through Scarborough Juniors in our local comp.

What made you want to get into doing scorebench? We all got involved as our children played through the Junior Competition and Hawks. I also am grateful for the late Phil Anderson who was a well know Hawks Board member/MSBL team manager over a number of years, who approached meto take on this role.

Can you please give a rundown on the different scorebench roles and what they entail? We all take turns to do different jobs. There’s Clock, Bench Chair, Score Visuals, Scorer and 24 Second Clock.

Bench Chair – Oversees the bench officials and provides neutral advice to the referees.

Clock – keeps the playing time of the game, starting and stopping the clock.

Scorer - Filling in the score sheet throughout the game.

24 Second clock (shot clock)  - a team has 24 seconds to put up a shot before a shot clock violation is called and a turnover. The ‘shot clock’ operator controls this clock by stopping and starting throughout the game.

Score Visuals - responsible for the visuals on the score board eg. fouls per player/ points per player.

We are all very experienced and eager to do whatever we are asked to do.

We all go to courses run by Libby Woods, which keeps us on our toes and keeps us up to date with all new rules that come through.

Favourite things about being such a big part of Hawks game nights?

Our Hawks Club is one of the best run Clubs in the SBL – Whatever we want for our bench will get it. We enjoy watching the players come through the system from Juniors to WABL then into SBL.

Anything else you would like to add?

We have all made many friends at the Club – I couldn’t think of belonging to any other Club. I am sure we are the envy of all the Clubs! We have the best seat in the house! Go Hawks!
