Charles Nix - On Week 1 of the Finals

I started last week by saying that the equation was simple: “We win both of our games and we finish second on the ladder with home court advantage through the play offs”. After two shaky starts we were able to do exactly that and have now put ourselves in the best possible position available to us.

Friday night was always going to be a battle against a Perth side needing to win to keep their hopes of finishing 4th alive, they came out hard and got out to a 17 point lead in the 3rd quarter before we started to chip away at it. Special mention needs to go to our bench guys who came on and gave us a heap of energy on the defensive end to change the momentum and put us in a position for our starters to finish the job.

On Saturday we had the difficult challenge of backing up from the tough battle the night prior, to take on the defending champions, Cockburn. They came out of the gate like they had nothing to lose and made us work to the end. Fortunately we had the answers in the end and finished the weekend with the 2 wins and second position on the ladder.

Before I get onto this week’s action I would like to make a special mention of CJ and everyone involved in our women’s program. CJ has been a fantastic coach to work with and a sounding board for me during the season. I’m looking forward to working with him long into the future. The girls unfortunately didn’t finish the season where they planned but fought until the end and can definitely hold their heads high with the effort they put in, they are a young team and the only way is up if the hard work continues.

This week is the week we have aimed for since our first training session back in January. The reason you play sport at this level is to play in finals and we have the opportunity to get the post season started on a positive note Saturday Night. Standing in our way is an experienced Mandurah side craving success and full of confidence after beating us down there on our last encounter.

As I mentioned last time we played them they have a fantastic import combination of Taylor Land and Taylor Mullinax who both work extremely hard, they also have great support from players like Della Madellena, Caporn, Trahair and Bowman. They won’t be an easy opponent but to win it all you have to beat everyone.

Thank you to everyone for your support so far this season, our supporters are a big reason why we have been able to get across the line in the close ones, and finals are generally close ones so we will be relying on you to step up with us.

I look forward to seeing as much blue as possible in the stands down in Mandurah on Saturdaynight.
As ONE, Nixy.
