Proposed court hire increases at the WABC

You may have already read Basketball WA’s release late last week in regards to the proposed further increase to court hire charges at the WABC.

The outcome of the current negotiations between Basketball WA (BWA) and the Government will have a direct effect on the Hawks cost of running our competitions and this cost will then impact on the cost for our children  to play basketball for the Perry Lakes Hawks at the WABC.

Our Association hires the courts to run our basketball programs which include competitions, training, and camps.  We have no control over the operating costs of the stadium and these costs are passed onto us in our court hire charges which we pay to BWA.

Effective from 1st July 2012 there has been a large increase in court hire paid by BWA and in turn by the Perry Lakes Hawks.  The further large increases under discussion for July 2013 are inappropriate as they will affect the viability of the basketball programs of BWA and Perry Lakes Hawks at WABC.

Hawks support BWA’s position that the only way to ensure continuity and future viability of the largely community based basketball programs at WABC is for the court hire charges set in July 2012 to be indexed to CPI for the next 5 years.  This will ensure that basketball can plan for the future.

In conclusion we want to let you all know that we have an active committee working with Venues West to improve the daily operations at the WA Basketball Centre.  We will also be doing everything we can to support Basketball WA’s efforts to control the cost of court hire at the WABC.

Feel free to circulate this information onto interested parties and if you feel strongly about our Association and our Junior Clubs predicament, contact your local Member of Parliament and the Sports Minister – Mr Terry Waldron (Terry.Wa;dron@mp.wa.gov.au).

If we all rally together our voices may get heard.
