Old Boys at it again

Barman Pete

The game between the Silver Lake Resources Goldfields Giants and the Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks was not the only game that was played on the 9th of June.

The ultimate excuse for a lads weekend away, an old boys game between two legends teams from the Hawks and Giants.

From the Hawks, players like Jerry Sinfield, The Big Cussler and lil Heathy Gardiner pulled up their socks, grew out their moustaches and dusted off their headbands to take to the court once again.

From the Giants side, players like Marcus Taylor, Mike Elliott and Michael Haney all deserve mentions but basketball doesn't get any bigger in Kalgoorlie than the one and only Calvin “Doc” Earl.

With a pre-game viewing of Prometheus to inspire them, and possibly some pre-game coldies to put the fire in their bellies, the old Hawks boys came out firing with little annoyances such as umpire's whistles and shot clock buzzers not slowing them down.

The trip, organised by former Hawks SBL coach Dion Dagostino (who happened to play for both Perry Lakes and Goldfields in his playing career) was more than a chance just to reignite the old rivalry.

It was a chance to relive the days of the cherished Kalgoorlie road trip.

Reports direct from the mini-bus on the way up, suggests that a record number of pit-stops were taken and David Boons infamous record on the trip to England may have been eclipsed in a third of the time.

The game continued with Pebbles Keene launching an array of left-handed three pointers and having the same amount of success as Dagostino's right handed ones.

However some stringent defence from Cussy and Scotty Harkess meant transition buckets were coming left and right for the Hawks, who looked like they were carrying a few less six packs than their counterparts.

Despite the best efforts of the Doc (who by far had the loudest reception of the night), the Kalgoorlie Old Boys just couldn't keep up.

The final score did not matter.

It was not a game to be played to find out who still, after all these years, had the superior basketball talents.

It was a game to be played purely for the excuse of a weekend away with the lads and catch up with some old rivals.

And in this regard, it was a huge success.
