Far West has finished 4th in the 2017 Mortlock Shield.
Far West won its first game over Far North in game one of this years carnival. A committed, youthful and enthusiastic Far West side put in fine display of fast running football. After trailling by 4 points as quarter time Far West lead by 15 points at half time, they played their best football in the third quarter and lead by 36 points at three quarter time before winning by 32 points.
Jake Warmington in the mid field and up forward was named best player and continues on from his best in the association game against Great Flinders and ANZAC Day medal in Round 1. David Wright was outstanding in defence, Jarrad Trowbridge with 3 goals up forward and in the mid field, Lawrence and Steven Benbolt played excellent games in defence and captain Broadie Chandler at centre half forward rounded out the best players.
Far West went into the final match of the 2017 carnival looking to break a 27 year drought in winning the Mortlock Shield and came up against a very tough opponent in Great Flinders. Many people thought Great Flinders would win the game easily but the Far West boys came out firing leading at quarter time 3.1 (19) to 1.0 (6) Great Flinders hit back in the second quarter to lead 5.1 (31) to 3.2 (20) at half time. Far West dug deep in the 3rd quarter to remain in the game and trail by 2 goals going into the last quarter 6.2 (38) to 4.2 (24). The final quarter saw a desperate Far West hit the lead with a few minutes remaining but a late goal in the dying minutes to Great Flinders win the game by 3 points. It was a fantasic effort from a young side who gave everything and did all Far West supporters very proud.
Congratulations to Jake Warmington who was named best Under 21 in Carnival winning the Don McSweeny Medal.
Lawrence Benbolt, Broadie Chandler, Jake Warmington & Kingsley Ware were named in the team of the carnival.
Broadie Chandler, Jake Warmington, Steven Benbolt, Lawrence Benbolt, Lionel Wilson & David Wright have made the EP Squad.
