Founder of the "Ian Coates Trophy"
Ian umpired 95 senior VFL matches and 5 VFL Finals and spent 9 years on the VFL appointments board.
Ian began as advisor in 1981 when the GVFUA and the KUA merged at a time when it's future was uncertain.
During his 3 years Ian established the GVFUA as arguably the leading umpiring body in Australia.He strived for perfection and he commanded respect from all football and umpiring people. His brilliant football mind, dedication and influence lifted the GVFUA to the professional level it is today.
In 1985, at just 44 years of age, Ian lost his fight against the incurable motor neurone disease.
