Introductory (Level 1) Accreditation
All umpires are to undertake a learning process which sees umpires become accredited in their chosen discipline.
The first step an umpire is required to complete is the Introductory (Level 1) Accreditation course which provides umpires with the theory and skills to see them become a competent umpire. The Introductory (Level 1) Accreditation course is a basic course covering all disciplines of umpiring.
As shown in the flowchart, umpires are to complete the AFL Online Level 1 Course. This is an online course that takes two hours to complete and the fee of $12, which the umpire has to pay, will be reimbursed upon proof of completion by the treasurer. Umpires will have to create their own login for the online course.

Once completed, the umpire will then undergo Induction where they learn about their chosen discipline. This will then lead to the final step which is a Practical Competency where the umpire is observed during a game and will be deemed as competent once they show a variety of skills and decision making to a satisfactory standard.
Advanced (Level 2) Accreditation
Once umpires have successfully completed Introductory (Level 1) Accreditation they can begin working towards Advanced (Level 2) Accreditation.
The flowchart shows the path umpires take to complete their Advanced (Level 2) Accreditation, which begins by learning a Curriculum set by SEFUL and incorporates both theory and practical work. Self Reflection is a helpful learning tool as it informs umpires which areas they are competent in and areas that need improvement. Once all this is completed, then just like Introductory (Level 1) Accreditation, a Practical Competency is undertaken. The umpire must be observed for a minimum of three games and will gain competency once they show satisfactory performances in a game to an advanced level.
