The Motor Accident Commission (MAC) Road Safety Round is set annually, usually in July.
MAC is a major supporter of community football, netball and sport in general in South Australia, the MAC Logo appears on match day balls every week. MAC sponsors our League and clubs, along with many other SACFL events such as the State Country Championships, City v Country game etc.
The purpose of the Road Safety Round is to raise awareness of road safety, an issue particularly important to us given we travel extensively, not only for sport and recreation, but as a part of country life. Accidents have affected every club and community within our region at some point, so this is a positive initiative seeking real outcomes in road safety, reduced death and injury.
Clubs will be distributed information and packs including resources with road safety messages for promotions on the day and permanently within clubs. Clubs are asked to promote the initiatives in their budgets and on the day. MAC run information workshops which are held at predermined dates at clubs. These are hard hitting messages on accident data, areas being focussed on by the police, how alcohol and drugs affect judgement, how they are detected/ measured, speeding and how long vehicles take to stop, heavy vehicle issues plus plenty more. MAC presenters are experienced and approachable, the workshops are valuable to everyone, particularly younger drivers or soon to be drivers.
Players and officials are asked to wear black arm bands to further raise awareness of the campaign. Medals are provided for the player whose conduct and the decisions that they make, positively affects the match outcome (ie: not necessarily the best player). This aligns with the theme for the campaign
Each club appoints a MAC Ambassador to assist runnning the Road Safety Round and generally coordinate MAC activities.
The Mid West Football League and Mid West Netball Association commends and strongly supports the MAC initiatives, we have just lost too many of our people to road trauma, and no club is untouched by this issue.
