Playing Life Membership for Guy Stringer
One of the MPNFL elite players has reached the significant milestone of 300 Senior Games. Sorrento’s Guy Stringer is the latest player to receive Life Membership of the League in reaching this milestone.
Guy is one of the most versatile players in the competition proving a handful up forward whilst having the ability to go play down back using exquisite skills in defence.
Starting his senior career way back in 1989 after coming through the Sorrento juniors Guy was soon in senior ranks taking it up to the opposition with stars like Brad Phillips and Andrew Callaghan proving great mentors.
By 1992 he was the winner of the clubs best and fairest and one of the top players across the competition drifting across half back marking almost at will and a thorn in opposition plans.
It was a shock for the club when halfway through the 1994 season Guy transferred to Division One club Pines under Leigh Carpenter, where he stayed for three seasons and was a key player in that clubs 1994 Premiership side.
Guy headed north to Darwin over the summer and spent the 1998 and 1999 seasons with Frankston VFA before returning to local football, but this time heading to Hastings again under Carpenter where he stayed 3 seasons taking out the 2002 club best and fairest award.
Edithvale Aspendale scored a coup by recruiting Guy north but at the end of the 2003, but he decided to return home to Sorrento as the club rebuilt itself after a decade of disappointment; he become one of the key players in the Sorrento Premiership of that year replicating his father Keith efforts of 1969 and 1979.
Back at Edithvale Aspendale for season 2005 and another club best and fairest in 2006 before again coming home to his beloved Sorrento in 2007 where he is still performing at high level each week, and imparting his vast experience on the young members of the team.
His efforts this year up forward have seen him kick 56 goals to win his first club goal kicking award.
There is not much that Guy Stringer has not achieved in local football, premierships, best and fairest, 21 times MPNFL interleague representative, 3 times VCFL representative and All Australian Country honours have come his way.
He still competes each week as it was his first game, still loving the game and the comradeship
that goes with it, his leadership on the field as always exemplary as he now becomes the mentor.
Guy has served under many coaches but lists Leigh Carpenter as the best although he has high regard for all realising it is not an easy gig. With Sorrento on the verge of another successful year Guy is keen to go round again in 2010 as he still enjoys the game and all the mates that go with it.
Guy Stringer is a deserved member of the 300 game club and Life Membership of the MPNFL is just reward.
Congratulations Guy Stringer.
