The Hastings and Tyabb match today marks an important pact between the two neighbours. The clubs will play for the very first time for a Cup to be named the George Slocombe Cup in honour of one of elder statesmen of Peninsula Football. George now in his 90th year began his football in his home town of Tyabb in 1936 as a 17 year old, following in his father’s big footsteps a former champion of both clubs. After one season Tyabb and Hastings merged and young George found himself in the B grade team predominately played at Tyabb ground, he won the goal kicking in that season although he played a few senior games. His career was interrupted by the war robbing him of many good years. In 1946 he became coach of Hastings after the resignation of Eddie Fisher and in the role became a legend that still stands today in taking one club to three consecutive Premierships, 1946, 1947 and 1948. Finishing his senior career George came back home to Tyabb to take up the coaching role of Tyabb who had just made the finals in C grade of 1949. Although now past his best he was still able to lead by example and assist the fledgling club. He returned to Hastings in 1952 after Tyabb disbanded and played B grade till injury took its toll in 1955. George played 146 senior games, won the 1941 Hastings Best and Fairest and was coach of one of the best ever Peninsula teams. Today Hastings and Tyabb clubs will honour George Slocombe with his name to a cup which will be proudly be played for each time these two teams meet.
