A gathering of over 150 people attended the 6th Annual MPNFL Women Making a Mark Luncheon to Celebrate Women in Sport held at the Sandhurst Club on Friday 28 June, 2013 with all monies raised going to the Reach Foundation.
The Luncheon was opened by the Mayor of Frankston Ms Sandra Mayer and in attendance were Crs Suzette Taylor, & Rebekah Spelman (Frankston City Council) and Amanda Stapledon, Mayor City of Casey.
Also in attendance were Kerry Hahn, Rory Sackville and Lisa Laing from the St Kilda Football Club.
The keynote speaker for the day was Dr Susan Alberti, AO,AM, Businesswomen, Philanthropist and Vice President of the Western Bulldogs Football Club who spoke on a variety of topics from her making a stand for women against Ch9’s The Footy Show when in 2009 she was successful in winning a defamation case.
Susan also talked about the death of her daughter from Diabetes and her endeavours to find a cure for this disease. To date, Susan has raised in excess of $100 million in the search for a cure.
Lastly Susan talked about her love of football and especially the Western Bulldogs Football Club and the Victorian Womens Football League.
On 29 June Susan became ‘President’ of the Western Bulldogs for the day in celebration and recognition of the AFL Women’s Round.
After Susan was Liv Powell, Senior Facilitor from the Reach Foundation. Liv is 24 years of age and has been involved with Reach since she was 16. She spoke about the work started by Jim Stynes and Paul Currie.
Today, Liv is predominately involved in training Reach’s senior crew and running Finding Heroes Professional Development Workshops.
“I really love Finding Heroes because I was lucky enough to be in a team running it with Jim once upon a time”, Liv says.
Unfortunately with a cancellation of our MC, MPNFL CEO Jeff Jones stepped up to this role, and to add a bit of fun to the day, Wendy Goldsack put out an SOS to son Tyson, a player with the Collingwood Football Club to attend.
An impromptu mother and son interview followed with lots of banter between the two of them. Tyson honoured his mother and the time and dedication she puts into her family and she is always putting her hand up to fundraise for people she doesn’t even know.
