HOW OLD IS YOUR ORGANISATION AND WHY ARE CLUBS CALLED
THE NICKNAMES THEY ARE?
Over the coming weeks all Leagues,
Clubs and Umpiring groups will be asked to provide two pieces of information to
the WorkSafe VCFL to enable us to update the history of our affiliates.
The first piece of information we
will be seeking is “how old” is your organisation. Rightly or wrongly we do not
have a concise list of our affiliates and when they were formed, even though
there are bits and pieces of information out there. During June I was aware
that the Merbein FNC and the Beaconsfield FNC both celebrated milestones.
Merbein celebrated their 100th year and Beaconsfield their 120th
(Congratulations to both clubs).
People, including the media, have asked
me how many WorkSafe VCFL clubs are over 100 years and 120 years because of the
achievements of these two clubs. My answer was clearly an estimate – approx 120
clubs over 100 years old and 50-60 over 120 years old, but they are only
estimates.
The Geelong Football Umpires
Association also turned 75 this season which is a terrific feat for an umpiring
group. In 2009 the Castlemaine FN celebrated its 150th year with the
Ballarat FNC also celebrating their 150th year in 2010. I’m sure
many will have noticed reports of which club is truly the oldest as “continuity
of years” is debated.
It would be fantastic to have one
complete honour roll of the age of our clubs and I trust when the opportunity
arises in the coming weeks to provide the details of when your club started
that you can support the project.
No doubt many clubs history will be
the result of amalgamations and name changes and in some instances they may be
a little difficult to trace.
The second piece of information we
will be seeking in the coming weeks will be the “beloved” nicknames of our
clubs.
