The Maryborough & Castlemaine District Football Netball League last Friday announced their nominee for Netball Victoria's Wingman Off-Court Champion program as Dunolly's Ashlee Lierich.
The Wingman campaign is a Victorian Government initiative to tackle alcohol-related violence, and encourages young people to take the "Wingman Pledge" and look out for their team mates by showing positive off-court behaviour.
Each team in the Central Highlands Regional State League netball competition nominated a club winner, from which a league winner will be decided followed by an overall winner from all Regional State League netball regions (Eastern, Central Highlands, Goulburn/North East and Western) and the Victorian Netball League.
Lierich, the reigning MCDFNL A Grade Best and Fairest, was nominated by MCDFNL team officials as being the best example from the MCDFNL's Regional State Netball team of the behaviours valued by the Wingman campaign.
"[Ashlee] leads by example on the court with her disciplined approach to the game, positive talk to her team mates and her willingness to give 100% under any circumstances, win, lose or draw" MCDFNL Netball President Debbie Weir commented when asked about Lierich's nomination. This is evident through the amount of votes she polls annually at club and league level.
"She promotes a healthy lifestyle through her commitment to fitness, being responsible with alcohol (never drinking and driving, and drinking in moderation when she rarely does) and her overall attitude towards participation in sport. "
"On top of everything else though, she's an extremely popular and highly respected person throughout her netball club, the MCDFNL and her local community".
Lierich was presented with her award by Weir and MCDFNL Media, Marketing and Events Manager Shaun Kelly during an on-court presentation before last Friday night's RSL match against Eureka, which the MCDFNL lost 39-33.
The RSL Regional winner of the Wingman award receives $250 plus $250 of sporting goods for her home club, with the overall winner receiving $1000 plus $1000 of sporting goods for her home club.
