Maryborough footballing product Troy Chaplin is set to return to his home state as a Tiger as part of the AFL’s new free agency period.
The Port Adelaide defender this week informed his Power team-mates and coaching staff that he intended to quit the club and return to Victoria.
Richmond will officially be Chaplin’s new home, with the Tigers lodging paperwork detailing their intention to sign the 26-year-old with the AFL on Monday afternoon.
Port Adelaide had until late yesterday afternoon to match the offer put to Chaplin, but opted not to, leaving him free to sign what is believed to be a four-year deal at Punt Road.
The Power kept Chaplin and Richmond coaching staff waiting however, announcing their intention not to match the Tigers’ offer until just minutes before the 4.30 pm deadline.
In a media release issued by the Power yesterday afternoon, Port Adelaide football manager Peter Rohde thanked Chaplin for his time with the club, but said it could not match the offer submitted by Richmond.
