Second Semi final Waubra vs Navarre
Navarre outclassed, Waubra for Grand Final.
People who attended expecting to see a hard-fought and closely-contested match were disappointed. It was one of the most one-sided games of the year, the young, fit and systematic Waubra side making the Navarre players look anything but a team that could attain second place on the ladder. Waubra now goes on to play in the Lexton Football League after a brillant display in the second semi-final which left Navarre standing.

Grand Final Waubra vs Navarrea t Avoca.
After a fairly even first half, Navarre played on brilliantly to convincingly defeat Waubra for the 1954 pennant. Grand Final
Waubra vs Navarre
Flag to Waubra after 5 years.
After three evenly contested quarters, Waubra finished brilliantly in the grand final on Saturday to defeat Navarre for the 1955 Lexton Football League premiership. It was Waubra’s first premiership since 1950 and supporters cheered wildly and rushed to congratulate the victorious players as they left the oval. In the first quarter Waubra had the same number of scoring shots, but finished with a deficit of five points. With a little more of the play and making better use of opportunities in the second term, Waubra had a lead of seven points at half time. Hurried shots by both sides produced a preponderance of behinds in the third quarter, but by the end of this term Navarre had managed to equalize the scores. It was still anyone’s game, neither side having shown any superiority over the other. But not long after the last quarter started it could be seen that Waubra had saved something for a finishing burst. Four goals three behinds were put on against tired Navarre’s one goal one behind, and there was no doubt about the issue long before the gong.

Second semi final Waubra vs Navarre at Avoca
Waubra snatched win in race against time.
With only four minutes to go and the scores equal, excitement ran high at the Lexton Football League’s second semi-final. By determined play and the smothering of Navarre’s efforts, Waubra, which looked like being beat half way through the last quarter, staged a lively finish to force through the vital scores, which meant victory. It was the best finish to a final match seen in the competition for some years and the hardest fought game between these two teams this season. During the elimination series Waubra and Navarre had met twice, these clashes resulting in one win each. Consequently, the result of the second semi-final was the subject of much speculation. Due to constant rain, the local oval was not in good condition and really first class football was not predominant nor could it be expected. Waubra missed the services of Joe Fraser, who has been playing brilliantly lately but who could not take the field on Saturday because of an attack of influenza. The full forward position was taken by Les Bandy, veteran of the side, who has returned to the game after an absence of several seasons. Bandy played a grand game reminiscent of his form of past years and, while perhaps not as dashing as Fraser, filled the position well with shrewd, unselfish football. Early in the game Waubra missed several easy chances from close in and Bandy, who marked about 35 yards out, was the first to produce a major score. A goal snapped by K. Parry brightened Navarre hopes early in the last quarter and only determined play on the back line prevented Waubra from getting still more in arrears. Time was fast running out and Navarre continued to attack, but a break through gave N. Dean a shot, which added a goal to Waubra’s tally. Then K. Parry snapped one for Navarre and Waubra was in trouble again. Bandy marked and again put Waubra within a point of the opposition. This seemed to be the signal for Waubra to put its full weight into a finishing burst. For the remaining few minutes the “Blues” jumped right into it talked to each other and the passes found each other. A point made the scores even. Four minutes left to play and Waubra seemed determined not to let it be a draw. A goal by J. Stepnell brought loud cheers from Waubra supporters and for the rest of the game the side forced the play to the play to the boundary to safeguard its lead.
Waubra 10 15 75 to Navarre 10 9 65
Waubra Best: L. Bandy, B. McDonald, N. Fraser, K. Dean, M. Karslake.
Wabra Goals: L. Bandy (4), N. Dean (2), K. Dean, S. Lavery, B. Morvell, J. Stepnell.
Waubra just had to win on Saturday. People not in the know may have wondered how or why the “Blues” managed to produce their great finishing burst, first when the odds seemed against them, and later when it looked like being a draw. Fact is a couple of weddings down Waubra way next Saturday would have made it a bit awkward for a full side to be mustered. (Avoca Mail 28/08/1956).
Grand Final Waubra vs Navarre at Avoca
Waubra’s 2nd and Brian’s 3rd in a row.
Jubilant Waubra footballers carried their captain-coach , Brian McDonald, from the Avoca oval on Saturday after winning the Lexton Football League premiership for 1956. It was Waubra’s second successive premiership and Brian’s third, as in 1954 he played with the victorious Ballarat side.
A Waubra farmer, Brian McDonald, aged 27, has capably coached the side for the past two seasons. Many rushed to congratulate him after the match, but he was extremely modest about his part in gaining the premiership. Said Brian: “Waubra is lucky to have such a wonderful lot of chaps. They all gave of their best to win the game today and I take little of the credit.
“Great co-operation” “For weeks they have been training hard and have given me great co-operation. “We have had practically a full muster at our twice-weekly training nights, the only absentees being those suffering from influenza which has been prevalent in the district recently.” “Some of our players have had to travel long distances to take part in training, but this did not worry them and they seldom missed.” “It is good to see the player’s keen interest rewarded.” Brian also spoke highly of the interest displayed and the work carried out by club officials and its many supporters. “This,” he said, “ has been most encouraging to us all and we the players, are glad to have done our part by carrying off the honors for 1956.” Brian commended the Navarre team for the fine sportsmanship displayed throughout the season and wished all players the best of luck. Among the first to enter the Waubra dressing rooms after the game was Alan Bulman, Navarre’s captain coach, who was cheered by Waubra players, officials and supporters for his brief but friendly speech. Mr. Peter Smith, president of the Lexton Football League added his congratulations to Waubra and to the runners-up commending each side for the sportsmanlike manner in which the match had been contested.
Flag goes to Waubra after even struggle
In a hard-fought, rugged grand final at Avoca, Waubra, with a lead of only three points half way through the last quarter, staved off several determined attacks byNavarreand increased the margin to 10 points before the final bell.
Waubra won the toss and kicking with the aid of a fairly strong wind, had 4-6 on the board against Navarre’s 1-2 when the first quarter ended. In the second quarter Navarre had the same number of scoring shots as did Waubra with the wind, but made better use of them to emerge at half time with a goal lead 6-7 to 5-7. Waubra got a run on early in third quarter and, recapturing the lead, increased it to 10 points before Navarre could score. However before the term ended Navarre was within a point of overtaking the opposition Waubra 7-11 to Navarre 7-10. In the last quarter Waubra played just as well against the wind as the side had done with the aid of it in the previous term. A goal and two points before Navarre replied with a sixer. This goal put Navarre again into the picture and with a deficit of only three points the Greens bombarded the forward zone strongly. Determined defence saved the situation for Waubra and the ball was wisked away to the other end, where a left-foot snap by Kevin Dean registered full points. Alan Bulman, Navarre’s captain, switched from ruck to forward, but was closely guarded and failed to get the opportunity he was after. Playing negative football now to hold the advantage, with the boundary line the principal target, Waubra’s tactics proved effective, but at times it looked as if Navarre was going to break through. From the kick-off following another point to Waubra, Navarre swiftly forward and Tom Driscoll raised supporter’s hopes by marking a short distance from the target. But their hopes were dashed when his kick went wide. So with a point to Navarre and another to Waubra the final bell heralded Waubra as 1956 premiers, with the final scores
