TAKING HIS CHANCES
Kyabram youngster Brad Whitford is making the most of his opportunity given to him by premiership coach and club legend Paul Newman this year.
With the Bombers turning over some players, Whitford has taken the chance since making his debut in the round two block buster against Shepparton.
Whitford remembers his first possession – a handball to Brad Edwards that ended up with an inside 50 for the Bombers.
The 18-year-old former Bendigo Pioneer says he gained plenty from playing in the TAC Cup in 2016 and in fact, credits the experience for helping him find his feet in his opening two games of senior football.
“The TAC Cup is the same speed of the GVL seniors, but naturally the GVL teams have bigger bodies,” he said.
The forward/wingman says last Sunday’s game against Rochester was a step up in pace on his first game against the Bears.
And to help adjust he has made the effort to pick the brains of Sam Sheldon off the field and the likes of Kayne Pettifer and Edwards on the field.
“They’ve all been really good with helping me with my positioning and just what you should and shouldn’t do,” he said.
He says he aims to play as many games as possible and not take his place in the team for granted, knowing there is pressure for spots.
Whitford says listening to last year’s grand final on radio and knowing the feeling that some of his really good mates would be experiencing has motivated him even more to want to help the club to another premiership.
