Mansfield’s Lachie Christopher is living the dream. And as such is Mansfield’s Mooroopna Golf Club Rising Star Award nominee.
The 17-year-old Mansfield Secondary College Year 11 student is having a wonderful season.
He captained the GVFL Under 18 side which defended their state championship at Deakin Reserve back in May and played his first senior game for the Eagles against Benalla in round three and hasn’t been out of the side since. The 172cm 70kg winger missed out on playing for the GVFL Under 18’s last season through injury but wasn’t missing out this season and was one of the first to inter-league training.
“I loved every minute of it and winning was even better. It’s something I will never forget.”
His inter-league coach, Jason Wells, was full of praise for the young Eagle, who he said was enthusiastic about representing the league and deserved his promotion to the seniors and beyond. Into the bargain, he was Mansfield best and fairest winner last season in the under 18’s and the year before the Benalla Junior League Under 17 best and fairest.
Lachie said while the senior side had been hit by injuries, it had allowed five under 18 players, including him, to make their senior debut.
“I love playing with the ones and the challenge it presents,” Lachie said.
The son of Cheryl and Paul, who played with Mansfield and Bonnie Doon, has twin sisters Millie, who plays netball for Mansfield Under 17’s, and Demmi, 15, and a younger brother Will, 13, who is just starting out playing juniors at Mansfield. After secondary school, Lachie hopes to go to university and do a physical education course and in the meantime play as many senior games as he can for the Eagles.
Other rising star nominations to date are Nick Sneyd (United), Rhys McKenzie (Mooroopna), Patrick O’Sullivan (Shepparton), Henry Peni (Shepparton Swans), Nate Trotter (Euroa), Kyle Mueller (Kyabram), Richard Tonizzo (Echuca), Charlie Morrison (Benalla), Matt Palmer (Rochester), Billy Cox (Seymour).
