Aspiring Premiers Kyabram, Rochester, Mansfield and Seymour all had terrific wins/terrific lead up games into the finals last weekend. Ky defeated the Shepparton Swans by 11 goals, 21.15 (141) to 11.9 (75) with Paul NEWMAN resting a bit of a hammy. Scott BEATTIE, David O'SULLIVAN & Chris ATKINS each kicked 3 goals. Mitch KEDDELL for the Swans kicked 5 and was named their best player and could poll very well in the Morrison Medal in the games he did play in when he was released from Williamstown. Rochester recorded a 90 point win over the badly depleated Mooroopna combo - the Tigers won 19.22 (136) to 7.4 (46). The Tigers had 11 goal kickers and finished the season with the very best defence statistic with only having 1102 points kicked against them. The nearest Points Against was Kyabram who had 1385 points kicked against them. That is a staggering 283 points (47 goal) difference. That stat. should tell a story. Mansfield could be premiers; they defeated the Bulldogs 20.11 (131) to 9.10 (64) - since Simon HART has gone to the full forward position he has really been exterting an influence on games. He kicked 10 last week, 6 the week before, 5 the week before that and 5 before that as well. Seymour were 99 point winners over Shepparton in the battle for 6th spot and a place in the finals - Brent and Paul COLBERT could be major players over the next few weeks - they are very talented. Seymour kicked 24.19 (163) to 9.10 (64) - Saad SAAD kicked 5 to win the Goal Kicking award for the second time, this year kicking 89 despite missing a few matches. Shepparton United finished off the season with two wins, this time over Benalla at Deakin Reserve, the Demons winning 18.16 (124) to the Saints 11.15 (81). Well done to the Benalla side as they really tried all year and their last quarter for the year was probably one of their best by kicking 7 goals 4 to United's 5 goals 1 behind. Congratulations to Phil CARROLL from Shepp United who won their Senior Best & Fairest award which was counted last Sunday. If we had a GVFL Team of the Year, Phil CARROLL would nearly have to be a monty go get a geurnsey. Likewise Euroa, they too had a pretty strong second half of the year and finished off well up on the Murray River with a 4 goal win over the Murray Bombers. Euroa kicked 13.21 (99) to Echuca 11.9 (75). Andrew DOXEY kicked 6 for the Magpies to wind up with 49 goals for the year. If the Magpies can retain who they have a recruit a few A Graders they should record more wins that losses in the new year.
The finals commence at 10 o'clock this Saturday morning at Deakin Reserve and at the Memorial Oval in Euroa. The 3rds commence at 10am, the Reserves at 12:05pm and the Senior games at 1:15pm. There are both Qualifying and Elimination finals being played this week-end at Deakin & Euroa on Saturday and at Rochester on Sunday. Selected winners will be underlined.
Saturday September 5th @ Deakin Reserve :- 1sts Rochester v Mansfield (Qualifying 1 v 2) 2nds Shepparton v Mansfield (Elim 2 - 4 v 5), 3rds Rochester v Mansfield (Elim 1 - 3 v 6) - this looks like a dirty day for the Eagles who are also catering at Deakin - its like a home game but at Deakin. I am now having second thoughts about the Senior game because although Rochester have the stingiest defence, Mansfield have the highest Points For having kicked a total of 2290 for the year which is 139 points (22 goals) more than the Tigers. Simon HART and big MENSCH in the forward line, Van Der KLOOSTER at CHB, MAHONEY, SHEAHAN, BOSHEVSKI versus AITKEN, DEUSCHER, WATSON - perhaps it is a good thing that both these teams have the double chance because both are really good sides. Perhaps a toss of the coin now. Netball :- A Grade Benalla v Echuca (Elim 2 - 4 v 5) B Grade Shepparton v Echuca (Elim 1 - 3 v 6) B Reserve Shepparton v Echuca (Elim 2 - 4 v 5) and 17 & Unders Benalla v Echuca (Elim 2 - 4 v 5)
Saturday September 5th at Euroa :- 1sts Kyabram v Seymour (Elim 1 - 3 v 6) BEATTIE, WITHERS, DELEDIO, ATKINS, OGDEN, the NEWMANS, O'SULLIVAN, REEVES and LOVISON, VICK and BECK, the Bombers determination and concentration should progress them into the Second Semi but the COLBERT boys and Saad SAAD and other Lions won't lie down. Damn! this is hard trying to pick the winners. 2nds Tatura v Mooroopna (Elim 1 - 3 v 6) 3rds Kyabram v Shepparton Swans (Qualifying 1 v 2) Netball :- A Grade Shepp United v Shepp Swans (Qual - 1 v 2) B Grade Shepparton Swans v Shepp United (Qual - 1 v 2) B Reserve Shepp United v Shepparton Swans (Qual - 1 v 2) 17 & Unders Tatura v Shepparton Swans (Elim - 1 v 2)
Sunday September 6th at Rochester :- 1sts Tatura v Mooroopna (Elim 2 - 4 v 5) Tatura to win because Mooroopna have been hit too hard by injury but have some really terrfic kids in the KYLE brothers Jake and Mitch and young Dylan CORNICK but so too have the Bulldogs with James SULLIVAN, Billy HICKS and Chris RYAN. Tatura's youth plus their big game experienced players should get the Bulldogs over the line to live again. 2nds Rochester v Seymour (Qualifying 1 v 2); 3rds Echuca v Shepparton (Elim 2 - 4 v 5). Netball :- A Grade Kyabram v Shepparton (Elim 1 - 3 v 6) B Grade Kyabram v Tatura (Elim 2 - 4 v 5) B Reserve Rochester v Tatura (Elim 1 - 3 v 6) and 17 & Unders Shepparton v Mooroopna (Elim 1 - 3 v 6)
First & Second Semi Finals next week-end - 1st Semi's at Benalla on Saturday 12th September, 2nd Semi's at Mooroopna on Sunday 13th September.
