Starting with the strains of Paul McCARTNEY and Wings The Mull of Kintyre, the Euroa Football Club immediate past President Xavier THOMSON hosted a wonderful service at the beautiful Memorial Oval to farewell a true Champion in the form of Norman Gordon MURPHY. Norm passed away last Saturday evening finally succumbing to kidney failure. Testimony to the great man Norm was, over 300 people attended the service on a lovely summer's day after such a stinker the day before. Norm was at rest on about the half forward flank on the South/West side of the ground in front of the shelter. Norm's partner and family were sheltered by a marquee'. An interesting aside is that Norm was a team-mate of our GVFL Secretary / General Manager Mr Keith WELLMAN with the Plenty Rovers (now Doreen) back in the 1955 season. Very heartwarming also to realise the Doreen footy club was well represented at the service. Likewise a very good roll up by members and past officials of the Tatura Football Club where Norm was President of the Bulldogs in 1975, '76 & '77 and again in 1980 having joined the committee when he moved to the area from Boort. Murph moved to the Creighton's Creek / Ruffy district in 1982 and pretty soon thereafter got involved with the Magpies. Norm joined the committee in 1984 to become President for the three seasons of 1986, '87 and 1988 and remained actively involved with the club and in fact the Goulburn Valley Football League as a very staunch Magpie and GVFL Man. Norm was elected as a Life Member of the G.V.F.L. of which he was so very quietly proud. Norm was farewelled through a very strong guard of honour to the music of John WILLIAMSON with True Blue. Well done to Peg and Norm's families and also to the Euroa Football Club for giving a True Blue Great Bloke a terrific send off...
