Reserves and Thirds previews
There is plenty of good football to be played out before the seniors get going today and tomorrow.
In the rRserves at Seymour today, Euroa and Kyabram do battle, starting at 12.05 and to start the day’s proceedings off Echuca and Benalla clash at 10am in the second semi-final.
Tomorrow, the Shepparton Swans and Benalla meet in the first semi-final of the reserves while in the thirds, Euroa and Seymour, will give followers something to yell about.
It’s always hard at this time of the season picking winners because of the fact all players, barring injury, are available and coming back from senior duties or returning to the thirds from reserve outings.
The Lions Thirds finished in fifth place on the ladder but don’t be fooled by that statistic because the Lions are now at full strength will all seven of their Assumption College players now being available.
One classic example of a good player coming back to the fold is the fact Xavier DIMASKI, who has big wraps on him, is in the Lions side and making a big impression on followers of the Lions and the opposition.
I wouldn’t like the job of coach, Matt O’SULLIVAN, and his selectors picking the sides for today and the remainder of the season because there’s going to be some heartache with someone having to miss out. It’s a tough time in all football clubs picking sides at this time of the season, especially if there’s a full list to pick from.
There is always someone going to be disappointed and missing a final berth or even the chance of playing in a winning grand final side.
Already we have seen Will MARTINELLO miss the finals after helping to get the Saints into the finals undefeated and there will be more casualties along the way.
But these things happen in the best of regulated footy teams and at the highest level.
Shepparton Printing Service Award leader for the best player in the Thirds before voting was suspended is Seymour’s Ricky MISITI, while his team mate, Kyle WINTER IRVING is one of the rising star nominations for the Mooroopna Golf Club Rising Star Award which will be announced at the Morrison Medal count at Mooroopna on Monday night.
Other rising stars who will be appearing for their side this weekend are Nate TROTTER for Euroa, Charlie MORRISON from Benalla, and Echuca’s Richard TONIZZO.
Of course there are plenty more rising stars in the competing teams who will go onto bigger and better things in their football careers. Many will make good local players; others will surprise and make it to the AFL and even go on and star at the highest level.
Last weekend, we saw the likes of Clayton OLIVER, Dean SMITH, Rhys McKENZIE play “double headers” for the Cats while “Bushies” Jye SIMPKIN, Nathan DRUMMOND appeared in Saturday’s senior side against Kyabram who had rising star nomination Kyle MUELLER, Bendigo Pioneers TAC Cup best and fairest Liam BARRETT and Murray Bushrangers star, Tom HOLMAN in their side.
One thing’s for sure, you can bank on seeing plenty of potential champions when you watch this weekend’s GVFL final series.
