Belmont Lions v Anakie
Like other matches this week, this one wasn't easy on the eye. Wind wreaked havoc down at Winter Reserve and had it not been for extremely wayward kicking from the Lions, than the margin could have been more than a devastating 94 points. The only major from the Roos came in the third quarter of the boot of Paul Gillett. Sean Gallagher again ran rags around the opposition and is proving to be one of Belmont's most influential players. Anakie must put up a much stronger fight next week or things will get ugly again against a Bell Post Hill side obviously incapable of mercy.
Bannockburn v North Geelong
The clash between the top two teams of the ladder was one of the most eagerly anticipated matches of the season thus far, but turned out to be a blowout with the result all but sewn up by half time. In a match in which North Geelong had an opportunity to prove its worth to the rest of the competition, the Magpies put in their worst performance of the year so far to be completely dominated by Bannockburn.
Peter Riccardi was again outstanding as was Alister Woods who played his first match for the season. Although it was the first loss of the year for North, there must now be questions posed after they were unable to compete with one of the league powerhouses. The next two weeks will prove crucial for the Pies against Thomson and Werribee.
Thomson v Inverleigh
Inverleigh pulled off the upset of the round to defeat the reigning premiers at home, a feat that no other side apart from Bell Post Hill has been able to achieve since 2007. Remarkably, the Hawks were also able to defeat Thomson in round two last year. Leading by only nine points at the final break, the match was set up for Thomson to make its trademark final quarter flourish at home but the young Hawks simply had too many legs. Richard McAdam and David Peel were dominant on the wings for Inverleigh while big man Owen Lewis again contributed with five goals. The result leaves the Hawks with a sniff of a top five position with Thomson sitting just inside.
Werribee Centrals v Winchelsea
Werribee is continuing to climb the ladder and is proving to be a worthy contender after handing out a thrashing to Winchelsea at Galvin Park. Apart from the third quarter it was all one way traffic and the Centurions slammed on 11 goals in the final term to run away 91 point winners. Anthony Kitchen was back to his best form with six goals and Trent Cole contributed five and was arguably best on ground. The match was over at half time Werribee leading by 10 goals and the remainder of the match proved to be academic. The Centurions will face a huge test next week against Bannockburn and it will be great opportunity for them to try and match it with the best.
Bell Post Hill v Geelong West
Things got ugly at Myers Reserve. Geelong West was on the wrong end of a 154 point drubbing, the largest margin from any match this year. Luckily for the Cheetahs, Bell Post Hill was still missing some of its stars otherwise the result could have been worse. With only one behind scored in the second half by West, this match wasn't one to remember, except for young star Caleb Bacely. Bacely booted 10 goals for the match, equalling the record haul for the season and was best on ground by far. Unfortunately for West, their woes look set to continue when they face a resurgent East Geelong next week. Bell Post Hill meets Anakie.
