Geelong West v Belmont Lions
In the final Friday night fixture for 2009, Belmont Lions ran all over Geelong West to record a 10 goal victory. In greasy conditions, the Lions were able to limit the Cheetahs ball movement, restricting them to only two goals for the match. Scott Pickett was arguably best on ground in his 100th match as he dominated throughout the midfield. Although Belmont now sit ninth on the ladder, they have some winnable games on the horizon and have a chance to push for a top five position. West are still in search for their first win.
Anakie v Werribee Centrals
A rampant 11 goal final quarter from Werribee saw the Centurions record a percentage boosting 84 point victory. With Anakie trailing by only four goals at the final break, they were still in with a sniff, although Werribee had the breeze at its back. The Centurions put on a clinic in the final quarter, sending out a message that they a force to be reckoned with. With the fast moving midfield and multi pronged forward line, they are certainly contenders for a top five position and should notch up another win next week against Winchelsea. Anakie on the other hand seem to lack some key position players and will find the going tough in the coming weeks.
Winchelsea v North Geelong
North Geelong remains the only undefeated team after it overcame a sluggish first half to run away four goal winners against a determined Winchelsea side. Although many tipped a blow out before the game, the Blues played inspired footy in the first half and held a 15 point lead at the main break. The Magpies showed why they are the top team though and eventually got on top to as Winch were only able to kick two goals after half time. Todd Elsey booted another six goals to take a strangle hold on the goal kicking table. Northâs biggest test will come next week when they meet Bannockburn, which will be seething after dropping its first game to Thomson.
Inverleigh v East Geelong
East Geelong is finally back on the winners list after they made light work of defeating Inverleigh. Although the scoreboard shows that East won by 47 points, the fact is they should have won by at least 12 goals. With 33 scoring shots to 11, the Hawks were lucky not to be completely blown out of the water at home. Marcus Hildebrand and John Sinclair were again outstanding for East, as was Ryan Closter who contributed with four goals. Unfortunately for Inverleigh, it seems their woes may continue next week when they face Thomson, while East face a season defining clash against Corio.
Corio v Bell Post Hill
It was always going to be tough for an injury decimated Bell Post Hill side to match it with Corio and although they fought admirably, the Panthers just didnât have the firepower to post a winning score. With the Devils holding only a seven point lead at three quarter time, they powered away in the final term and had it not been for some wayward kicking throughout, they would have won by more than 34 points. The absence of defender Brad Martin clearly hurt Bell Post Hill, although the one saving grace was the fact that Billy Nicholls wasnât playing for Corio. Both sides boasted a somewhat depleted forward line, with Robbie Cavka the lone hand down forward for the Panthers. The Hill should return to the winners list next week against Geelong West.
