Anakie cast aside Coach Dan Gibbs on Thursday night but the old wives tail that a change of coach brings a change of fortune did not hold true out at Anakie Reserve yesterday.
It did early with a bluster wind favouring the Geelong end and Anakie playing very direct football trough usual key Lazzarich and Richert. East Geelong looked a little flat but managed to work hard into the breeze on occasion to 20 points down at the first break. They may have been closer if not for some telling marks by Purvis in defence.
A colleague remarked to me I think East may be “a bit fired up” after being out played, and they certainly were. O’Toole started dominating out of the middle using his strength and quick handball to give the centre break count almost exclusively to the Eagles. Murphy started to come into the game along with Closter who was very impressive. And 8 goal to 2 quarter saw East back in front and in control.
Anakie were going to need at least 6 or 7 in their last chance with the wind but delivered only 3 goals 4 and it was the young sides disposal and inability to hit a target that hampered them. This caused turnovers and allowed east Geelong through Bolton, Ververs and the earlier mentioned guys kick 4 goals into the breeze.
A 19 point lead into the last change was always going to be difficualt to peg back and East Geelong ran the game out comfortably, final scores being Anakie 13.12-90 East Geelong 19.12-126
Anakie are now a game behind Thomson from the final 5 with must win games against Inverleigh and Corio in front of them.
