WERRIBEE Centrals made it to the top of the GDFL ladder at the end of the home and away season and now under coach David Leatch, have made it into the grand final on Saturday.
It wasn’t east though as East Geelong staged another fight back, which has been symbolic of this finals campaign, to win a preliminary final thriller at St Albans.
Chris Hickey kicked a great snap goal , the second for East in the quarter , to draw within two point and a repeat of last week's semi-final loomed.
But this time the Centurions managed to hold out against everything the Eagles threw at them in the final minutes.
The Eagles let another side get the jump on them as Werribee kicked four first quarter goals to Easts five points. East did not look like wanting the ball compared to the Centurions ferocity and in conditions like Saturday it was not a good beginning.
Coach David Leatch who was furious with Werribee’s effort against Bell Post Hill in the 2nd semi was thrilled with the accountable football on show. It was even more impressive for Werribee given they had six players out of the side including David Hall and David Todaro.
They now face Bell Post Hill who routed them in the second semi, but Leatch is of the view that you don’t need to motivate players for a Grand Final as the opportunity comes along rarely enough. "Grand finals bring out different things in different people," Leatch said
For East the year is over and somewhat disappointingly so, with inconsistent football through the years costing them a crack at a back to back opportunity. East Geelong coach Adam Skrobolak bemoaned the sides inaccuracy "If we had of kicked straight we would have been in a much better place." Having said that though he did not believe the Eagles had played out a full game all year.
Toby Bray was probably best afield for the day if not Leatch himself who has provided some inspired leadership this year.
Bell Post Hill will meet Werribee Centrals at 2:15pm Saturday 11th September at St Albans
