Athletics is a popular sport within the Olympic Games, the 100m being one of the biggest events. Elama Fa'atonu of American Samoa was hoping to progress from the Preliminary rounds to round 1 of the 100m sprint. Thinking about the moment he took to the blocks, Elama said, “the crowd was great, as I looked out I saw the finish and knew I had to reach it, as long as I tried my best.”

VIDEO: Megan Makes a Splash for America Samoa

Team American Samoa kicked off their London 2012 Olympic campaign, with 100m freestyler Megan Fonteno taking to the pool. Megan reflected on her race, and what she was feeling as she stepped out to take part in her first Olympic Games. Megan finished 6th in her heat, with an overall ranking of 35th, after a time of 57.45 seconds, just a tenth of a second off her personal best.

Megan Fonteno Makes a Splash in the Pool for American Samoa

On Day 5 of the Olympic Games in London, team American Samoa kicked off their campaign in pool, with 19 year old Megan Fonteno taking part in the 100m freestyle. Drawn in lane 1, heat 3, Megan was ready to take part in the biggest sporting event in the World.

After diving into the pool, Megan had a comfortable first 50m in 27.27 seconds; on the second 50 meters Megan’s split was 30.18 seconds. Finishing 6th in her heat and 35th overall Megan was a tenth of a second away from her Personal Best with a time of 57.45 seconds.

American Samoa show the world their culture

The eyes of the world descended on London, for what many called the greatest show on Earth. 204 Teams from around the globe, came together to celebrate the Opening of the 30th Olympiad. The show, directed by Danny Boyle of ’Slumdog Millionnaire’, was showcasing Great Britain through the years, jam packed with British Culture.
