Bring your calculator to the footyTHE equation to play finals in its first season has just gotten a lot more complicated for NT Thunder following its loss to Southport at the weekend.
The Michael McLean-coached side were humbled by Queensland Australian Football League giants Southport on the Gold Coast on Saturday by 48 points.
The loss has resulted in the Territory team being shunted outside the top five, and in real danger of missing the finals in its inaugural season.
The Thunder share a win-loss ratio of 10-7 with the two teams above them: Darryl White's Mt Gravatt (4th) and Brisbane Lions (5th). Their respective percentages are 116.53 (Vultures), 112.51 (Lions) and 112.11 (Thunder).
Worse still for the boys in ochre is that the Lions play the winless wooden-spooners Western Magpies in their next match while the Thunder play the improving Aspley on the Sunshine Coast. And they face another four-hour flight from Darwin to Brisbane and an hour's drive north on the Bruce Highway to Maroochydore.
The defeat to Southport was the Territory team's third loss in a row.
