Teams do battle for school title in CairnsFAR North Queensland's Abergowrie College are winners of the 2009 under-17 Indigenous secondary school championships at Cairns.
AFL Queensland Kickstart program manager Rick Hanlon said Abergowrie's football team was a quality side.
"It was obvious that Abergowrie were the team to beat from the early trial games," Hanlon said.
"It was just a good group of kids that have come together. We could easily have put 15 players from the Abergowrie team in our Crusader championship-winning team, such was the quality of these kids."
Abergowrie (its team pictured here celebrating their win in Cairns) had supplied seven players to the 2009 Crusaders team which won the state-wide Queensland Country under-16 championships in April. It is the former college of Queensland Scorpion (national under-18s side) 2009 team member Anzack Newman.
In Cairns, Abergowrie players Harry Kepa, Javid Bowen and Leroy Enosa were names as its best, while Enosa, Paul Walit (Djarragun) and Francis Mosby (Tagai) won their respective coaches awards.
Results: Abergowrie College 17.6 (108) d Tagai College 4.6 (30); Djarragun College 11.11 (77) d Tagai College 3.4 (22); Abergowrie 12.6 (78) d Djarragun 5.1 (31).
