Lions keep Tigers at bay in a thrillerTHE Umbakumba Lions have continued their unbeaten run in the Grooyte Eylandt Football League after a thrilling one-point win against Angurugu Tigers in Round 6 at the weekend.
The Lions were pushed all the way by a persistent Tigers team but they prevailed by the slimmest of margins, 6.11 (47) to 7.4 (46).
Gareth Mamarika was the winning side's top goal-kicker with four for the match while the Tigers' Hayden Lalara booted three for his team.
In the other match, Carl Lalara increased his lead in the GEFL's goal-kicking with a bag of four as his side, the Angurugu Crocs, ran all over Umbakumba Roos, to win by 100 points, 16.19 (115) to 3.1. (15).
Lalara now has 17 goals for the season, five ahead of team-mate Nevil Nunggumajbarr (12). But both men were upstaged at the weekend by fellow Croc Kesley Lalara, who booted nine against the Roos.
The GEFL's previous round (Round 5) was a one-match round due to a large number of players having ceremonial obligations on the island, which is located in the Gulf of Carpentaria, on the Northern Territory's east coast.
The island's first Umbakumba derby was held in this round with the Lions and Roos battling it out. The Lions stamped their authority over their opponents with a comprehensive 19.10 (124) to 7.9 (51) win.
