Davis, Franklin, and Lovett in line for awardsINDIGENOUS footballers have completed a trifecta of nominations for the AFL's Goal of the Year from Round 17, and if one in particular does not come close to winning the award at season's end, there has got to be something wrong.
As only Collingwood's Leon Davis can, the mercurial one conjured a goal last Friday night so outrageous yet so natural in its execution that it would have left even the most worldy observer slack-jawed with awe.
Davis was roughly 30-35 metres out from goal, providing support to a team-mate hard up on the boundary line, when he received the ball from a quick handpass. With about half a metre to move and a Carlton opponent breathing down his neck, Davis stole a glimpse at the sticks, dropped the ball on his right foot at the correct angle and rode a shove to the back as it made contact. The ball bounced once and on its second took a right turn through the posts. Such was Davis's proximity to the boundary line that his right foot hit the line in his follow through.
Another of Davis's goals later in the game was also nominated.
Hawthorn's Lance Franklin, whose five majors against Geelong on Saturday pushed his season tally to 56, was the other nomination this round, while Essendon Andrew Lovett's hovering speccy over a Richmond opponent on Sunday was added to the Mark of the Year nominations.
