Sydneysiders defeat Canberrans first time in three attemptsSYDNEY is king of NSW and ACT football after its representative team defeated AFL Canberra at Blacktown on the weekend.
The Sydneysiders' 24-point, 15.12 (102) to 12.6 (78), win on Saturday is the first time the city's side has beaten the Canberrans in three attempts in the biennial clashes.
The new Blacktown Oval, the home for the AFL's proposed 18th team, was christened with senior action where AFL Sydney responded from a poor first half to take the lead in the third quarter and kick away in the last to record the win and claim the Carter/Jesaulenko Shield in perfect conditions.
AFL Canberra, featuring Koorie man, John Love, who at 24 was one of his side's oldest players, started well enough but they undid their hard work in the first quarter by fritting away a 27-point lead.
That was reduced further to just eight points by half-time after which the Sydneysiders came home hard in the third term before powering away in the last to win and claim bragging rights until 2011 when the sides meet again.
