New winners in Round 2 on Groote EylandtTHE Angurugu Crocs and Alyangula Swans have recorded their first wins of the season after the completion of Round 2 in the Groote Eylandt Football League (GEFL).
The seaside mining town of Alyangula played host to Round 2 of the Groote Eylandt Football League last Saturday. Nestled among African mahogany trees beside the beach, both GEFL games were played under lights in what would have to be on one of the Northern Territory’s most picturesque grounds.
Coming into the second round off a narrow loss, the Angurugu Crocs were all set for a big one against the Umbakumba Roos. As expected the Crocs came out hard and fast, kicking the opening nine goals to the Roos one point. Carl Lalara was providing the majority of run through the centre for the Crocs, with help from team-mate Robbie Murrungun off the back flank.
The Roos held off the onslaught of goals in the second quarter, restricting the Crocs to just three goals. Roos coach, Basil Mamarika opted to flood the backline and tag the dashing pace of the Crocs' Clarence Mamarika in an effort to cut down the deluge of goals.
But Angurugu lifted another gear, showing the 250-plus spectators that they will be a side to look out for. The Crocs kicked a whopping 14 goals to the Roos' two in the second and third quarters, mauling the Roos in the process. Final scores saw the Crocs win 28.18 (186) to 2.7 (19).
The Crocs' impressive display was highlighted Carl Lalara's 11 goals and Robbie Murrungun's nine, while Kieren Lalara booted three.
Swans win pre-season cup rematchWITH the sun fully set, the second game of the GEFL's Round 2 saw a rematch of the pre-season Lightning Cup Grand Final. The pre-season premiers, Angurugu Tigers took on the home team, the Alyangula Swans.
Coming off a first-round bye, the Swans worked hard leading up to the match, focusing on game structure that would suit the small oval and a way to shut down the fast-running community side, the Tigers.
The Tigers came out pouncing, kicking the opening goal in the hope of getting a handy lead early but the Swans retaliated by kicking direct to big man up forward, Matty Jones, who was out-marking any Tiger that was put on to quell him.
Coming into the first break, the Swans had kicked five goals to the Tigers' two.
In the second quarter, both teams had kicked three goals each, with excellent defending by the Tigers that restricted the Swans.
The 'premiership quarter', the third, saw the Tigers take it up to the Swans, largely through the dashing pace of Joquinn Murrungun and Randy Ngalmi. The Tigers won close to 80 per cent of the play for the term to trailed by four goals. But it seemed the Swans were not prepared to lose their first game.
The final quarter saw the Swans fly all over the Tigers with player-coach Casey Robins showing his depth of talent around the ground, leading the Swans to an 11-goal victory. Final scores were Alyangula Swans 18.9 (117) to the Angurugu Tigers 7.6 (48).
The Swans' Jones kicked eight goals and team-mate Casey Robins booted seven. For the Tigers, Nevil Nunggumajbarr kicked three and Joquinn Murrungun two.
