Victoria win national women's championshipsTHE unthinkable was unfolding at Subiaco Oval on Sunday: Western Australia was challenging Victoria in the AFL National Women's Championships Division 1 Grand Final, with Nyoongar woman Krystle Rivers the catalyst for an early WA surge.
A goal to Rivers (pictured) helped WA to a seven-point lead at quarter-time, 2.1 (13) to 1.0 (6), and got the building crowd for the West Coast-v-Geelong match into the game.
Strong defensive work from WA in the second quarter held the Vics out for a time but they managed to squeeze two goals while keeping the hosts goal-less for the term to wrest back the lead, 3.0 (18) to 2.3 (15).
The might of the Vics began to assert itself in the third term and they piled on four unanswered goals to effectively seal the contest. WA got a consolation goal in the final term where Victoria kicked three more to win with a remarkably accurate 10 straight majors, 10.0 (60) to 3.4 (22).
In the Division 2 decider at Fremantle Oval, also on Sunday, South Australia proved far too strong for a brave New South Wales, winning 12.10 (82) to 4.5 (29).
There was no final-day celebrations for the NT Kites after they lost their final pool game to eventual champions South Australia on the Saturday. It means the NT team, with 20 of its 25-player squad Indigenous -- went away from the championships win-less, and last on their division's ladder.
