The Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands team and Yuendumu Magpies played an entertaining game at the home of football as the curtain-raiser to the Collingwood-v-Port Adelaide AFL match.
The teams were playing for the Desert Spirit Cup, which was organised through Collingwood coterie group, the Industrial Magpies and supported by Port's AFL Fostership Program with the Maralinga Tjarutja Lands, located in the north-west corner of South Australia.
The APY Thunder team are a combined side while the Warlpiri mob's Yuendumu team is a club side in the Alice Springs-based AFL Central Australia competition.
It started well for the Magpies, which booted five goals in the first term to take a 14-point lead at quarter-time. But the Thunder chipped away at the lead with four straight goals to take the lead just before half-time. From there it was all the Anangu's way, kicking seven goals to one to claim the inaugural trophy.
