THE AFL's Indigenous Round will be launched today at 10am at the Koorie Heritage Trust in MelbourneAFL Foundation CEO and Indigenous Programs Manager Jason Mifsud will be in attendance with Indigenous players Travis Varcoe (Geelong), Josh Hill (Western Bulldogs), Daniel Wells (North Melbourne), Eddie Betts (Carlton) and Sharrod Wellingham (Collingwood).
The themed round will highlight the relationship between Australian football and Indigenous Australia. It will also celebrate the contribution of Indigenous players to the game, along with the role the game has played in building bridges between cultures.
2009 AFL Indigenous Round -- Round 9: Tuesday, May 19 to Sunday, May 24Tuesday, May 19 at 10am: Indigenous Round launch at the Koori Heritage Trust and Cultural Centre in King Street, City. Focus of the launch will be around land and the Indigenous players' country. Imalu Tigers arrive in Melbourne from Tiwi Islands, will play a scratch match against Hurstbridge.
Wednesday, May 20 at 11am: Dreamtime at the G press conference with players and coaches, MCG. Richard Tambling (current Richmond), Phil Egan (former Melbourne, Richmond), Patrick Ryder (current Essendon) and Dean Rioli (former Essendon) will be in attendance. 12pm: Dreamtime at the G Luncheon, MCG. Two Indigenous Hawthorn players travelling to Launceston to conduct a clinic for Indigenous players. Melbourne Conversation, Melbourne Town Hall: A The Long Walk event. The topic is
Footy, Social Justice and Indigenous Wellbeing. The panel is Michael Long (former Essendon), David Wirrpanda's mother, Alan Brown (coach of Fitzroy Stars) and is being moderated by John Harms (author).
Thursday, May 21: Long Walk press call in Melbourne. Imalu Tigers training at Windy Hill.
Friday, May 22: Twenty-four 11-year-olds from Far North Queensland arrive in Melbourne. The KickStart kids will participate in the Long Walk and be involved in half-time activities during Dreamtime at the G.
Saturday, May 23 at 2pm: Dreamtime at the G entertainers press call: Gurrumul and Dan Sultan. 4pm: Long Walk activity in Federation Square. 4.30pm Brambuk Eels (West Victoria) v Imalu Tigers (Tiwi Island) curtain-raiser to be broadcast on Southern Cross Central through central and northern Australia. 5pm: Flying Boomerangs meet Qantas CEO Alan Joyce. 6pm: Long Walk to the MCG. 7pm: Dreamtime at the G game Richmond v Essendon. 8.30pm Flying Boomerangs lap around the G at half-time. Prior to Adelaide v Carlton at AAMI Stadium: APY Thunder v Maralinga Eagles. Prior to WCE v Collingwood at Subiaco Yamitji Sharks (Geraldton) v Nyoongar country (South of WA).
Sunday, May 24: Flying Boomerangs in Melbourne to conduct workshops as they continue their Certificate II Course in Indigenous leadership.
Friday, May 29 at 12.30pm: Jenny Macklin will graduate the Boomerangs with their Cert II at AFL House.
