New-look in second year for AFLCAFOOTBALLERS in Central Australia now have a better than even chance to play in the finals following AFL Central Australia's decision to form a top five for 2009.
The decision is one of a raft of changes for the second-year league, which in the 2007 off-season combined the Alice Springs CAFL teams with the Country Cup community teams to create a 'super league' of 10 teams.
Coming into the league this year are the MacDonnell District Crows, a merged entity of former Country Cup club Papunya with Haasts Bluff.
It makes the AFLCA one of regional Australia's biggest leagues with perhaps the strongest Indigenous identity.
At Easter time, 28 teams competed in the annual Ngurratjuta Cup pre-season carnival with the Power and Water development Squad again winning the Division 1 title, this time over Western Aranda.
Community teams Mt Allan and Papunya Tjula fought for the Division 2 title with the Eagles prevailing.
Round 2 of the AFLCA gets underway today.
