One from one as new season beginsFITZROY Stars have made a winning start to their second season back in competition, defeating historical rivals Reservoir in the opening round of the Northern Football League at the weekend.
The Division 2 club, which has reserves and under-18s, ended last season in seventh place, one spot out from a maiden finals berth in their first foray into club football after 14 years.
But there is a another challenge at play for the Fitzroy Stars, one that will ensure plenty of intrigue as the season progresses.
This year, the NFL has introduced a mid-season relegation system whereby teams that, by Round 13, are in the bottom six of the 13-team Division 2 will be placed into a 'provisional Division 3 competition and will play each other in the final five home and away rounds'.
"The future of Division 3 next year will be at the discretion of the NFL Board, however the (top) eight teams finishing in Division 2 will be exempt from consideration for Division 3 in 2010," the league said in a statement.
It is not where the Stars envisage themselves to be. They have made no secret of their desire to play Division 1 football.
