Sponsorship deal sees coverage resumeTUNE your radios on match day to 98.9FM if you're in south-east Queensland (or check local guides if you live elsewhere) because footy's back on the airwaves.
The popular National Indigenous Radio Service coverage has resumed after the organisation secured a two-year sponsorship deal with the Bank of Queensland.
The deal will see the radio station, which features former AFL stars Darryl White and Gilbert McAdam, cover three games per round: Friday night, Saturday and Sunday, including all Brisbane Lions games.
NIRS chairman and general manager of 989FM in Brisbane, Tiga Bayles, said in a statement:
"We have been involved with coverage of AFL for 12 years and each year we struggle to raise enough revenue to cover our costs. We are a community network of 200-plus stations but given Community Broadcasting restrictions we are unable to get the required level of commercial support that is afforded to the large commercial networks.
"The support from Bank of Queensland is a significant acknowledgement by a great Queensland institution that our service is worthy of support. We are continually looking at ways in which we can provide employment pathways for Indigenous Australians, and the AFL broadcast that we provide is a valuable service that is sought after by our people."
