Collingwood game in Perth prevents veteran from playing in Darwin
A CLASH of dates is thought to be behind West Coast's decision to not allow veteran David Wirrpanda to play for the Indigenous All-Stars in Darwin next month.
The Eagles and Collingwood will play their opening NAB Cup game at Subiaco Oval on February 7, the same day as the All-Stars and Adelaide battle it out in Darwin.
Fremantle, however, are expected to allow several of its players to play. The Dockers' opening NAB Cup game against Richmond at Subiaco will be played the following weekend.
Injury has conspired to prevent Wirrpanda from playing for the All-Stars since the concept was revived in 2003. And though he is reportedly in top shape entering his 14th AFL season, the timing of the NAB Cup match, which was originally to be played in Cape Town, South Africa, but was cancelled due to the global financial crisis, meant that a clash was inevitable.
McLeod could be ready
INDIGENOUS games record holder Andrew McLeod could be a shock inclusion for the All-Stars next month.
McLeod underwent knee surgery in October and it was thought his pre-season would consist of training only until the season proper at the end of March. But his progress has been rapid and his recent form on the track suggest he could play at least one or two pre-season matches.
Meanwhile, All-Stars coach, Brisbane triple premiership player, Chris Johnson has announced his support staff for the game: former Lions team-mate Darryl White, former Essendon and Carlton utility Corey McGrath, AFL Foundation chief Jason Mifsud and Suncoast Lions (QAFL) coach Craig Brittain complete the five-man match committee.
The All-Stars squad is expected to be announced soon.
