Nyoongar champion nominated for AFLPA award
FORMER Fremantle forward Jeff Farmer is in line to receive some post-retirement credit from his peers.
Farmer is one of a number of AFL retirees nominated in the AFLPA's Madden Medal awards, which 'celebrate the contributions of all retired players across a number of on- and off-field categories'.
Farmer is nominated for the football achievement award, which takes into account 'games played, premierships, awards/medals, style of play, professionalism, leadership, development of game, advocacy on behalf of players, legacy to the game'.
The enigmatic forward retired this year after 13 years, 249 games and 483 goals in the AFL.
In Farmer's category are former team-mate Peter Bell, a two-time North Melbourne premiership player, Shane Crawford (Hawthorn), Fraser Gehrig (St Kilda), Nigel Lappin (Brisbane Lions) and Scott West (Western Bulldogs) among others.
There are three categories -- the others being personal development and the community spirit awards -- and they culminate in the Madden Medal itself.
The award is named in honour of former AFLPA Presidents and champion Essendon and Carlton players, Simon and Justin Madden.
The awards began last year and the Kangaroos' Glen Archer was the inaugural winner. They are on in Melbourne on Friday, December 5.
