Yuendumu Magpies win 2008 AFLCA Premiership
A BRILLIANT six-goal effort and best-on-ground performance by Yuendumu's Liam Jurrah has delivered his side the 2008 AFL Central Australia premiership after defeating Pioneer by 24 points at Traeger Park at the weekend.
The former Country Cup powerhouse club are the proud new owners of the expanded AFLCA's first premiership with their 15.11 (101) to 11.11 (77) victory in front over 2500 people.
Jurrah, who had a brief stint with AFL club Collingwood's VFL side earlier this year, was awarded the Everingham Medal for the game's best player.
The agile utility set the throng of travelling Magpies fans into raptures with a four-goal opening term, however Pioneer responded with a five goals-to-three second term to square the ledger 8.5 apiece at half-time.
But Yuendumu kept last year's runners-up to two goals in the second half while adding five in the third quarter and four more in the last to run out memorable winners.
Young Cowboys buck Souths
THERE is double celebration in community footy this weekend after Anmatjere defeated South Alice Springs by 14 points in the Under-17s grand final on Saturday.
Led by Leroy Tilmouth, who kicked seven goal for the Cowboys, Anmatjere held on to win 12.13 (85) to 10.11 (71).
The loss was a cruel blow to Souths, who finished the season on top of the ladder with just one loss and who defeated Anmatejere in the second semi-final.
In the four-team B grade (reserves) grand final, Souths had some joy, defeating Wests by 47 points, 93 to 46.
