DUO share in Subiaco's premiership 'three-peat'
THE word 'three-peat' will be part of Allistair Pickett's vocabulary now after his side Subiaco rose up over a brave Swan Districts to capture the 2008 WAFL Premiership on Sunday.
Pickett, and Adam Cockie, shared in the club's first hat-trick of premierships in the Lions' 22.16 (148) to 14.7 (91) 57-point victory in front of 22,000 people at Subiaco Oval.
Pickett has shared in all three premierships and is his fourth at the club after first winning a flag in 2004.
But unlike the Lions' previous triumphs, this one didn't come without an early fright.
The Garth Taylor-captained Swans shot out to a 21-point lead in the first quarter with some superb link-up play that the usually sure Lions were unable to counter.
The Swans held on to that lead until time-on in the second when the real Subiaco emerged from its slumber. Four goals in as minutes saw the Lions take a four-point lead into half-time and from which the Swans never recovered.
A clever goal by Jeff Garlett raised some hope for the Swans but once they got a sniff of victory, the ruthless Lions machine kicked into overdrive and did what they've been doing to opposition sides in grand finals for the past three years.
Jetta best-on-ground in Colts
THERE was at least some joy for Swan Districts fans at the weekend after their Colts side won back-to-back premierships with a win over Perth.
Led by Mel Whinnen Medallist, Neville Jetta, as the best player on the ground, Swans ran out 44-point winners, 15.13 (103) to 9.5 (59).
