YOUNG Blue's act of courage rewarded, now in the running for top award
HE MAY not be as fashionable, even flash, as his contemporaries, but Carlton's Joe Anderson knows what to do when the chips are down.
The Darwin Buffaloes 2004/05 premiership player put his body on the line in the match against Brisbane at the Gabba two rounds ago.
That he did it in the path of man-mountain, Jonathan Brown, no less, and his act literally saving the game for the Blues, has put the youngster in the running for the AFL's Army Award.
Anderson, who put in a match-winning performance for the Buffaloes in that grand final, has played just four games for the Blues this year for a total of eight in total.
He is one of six finalists for the award which recognises acts of courage on the football field. It is in its second year and Essendon's, and Anderson's one-time opponent in Darwin, Alwyn Davey, was last year's winner.
* Fans have until Tuesday, September 9 to visit
the AFL's Army page and vote for the player they think best represents the Army’s core values of courage, initiative and teamwork. The winner will be announced at the All-Australian Dinner on Monday, September 15.
Motlop, Franklin in All-Australian squad
SELECTORS have picked just two Indigenous players in the initial 40-man All-Australian squad.
Hawthorn gun Lance Franklin and Port Adelaide's mercurial Daniel Motlop got the nod and will know in just over a week if they've been good enough to win the end-of-season honour.
Franklin's storied season is well known, with his becoming the first Indigenous player at VFL/AFL level to kick 100 (or more) goals in a season, the first player to do it in 10 years in the AFL, and the first Indigenous player to win the Coleman Medal.
Motlop's levels of magic have stepped up a notch and despite his side's slide down the AFL ladder, he has been a consistent contributor for the Power this season.
Neither player has won selection in the honorary team before.
