TRIO ready to take their football education further
THREE Indigenous boys will take another step towards their football education when they move to the AIS/AFL Academy in Canberra at the end of this month.
Hopevale's Rex Liddy (from AFLQ club, Kenmore), Darwin's Steven May (Southern Districts, NTFL) and Alice Springs' Curtly Hampton (Pioneer, AFLCA) were this week rewarded for their performances at the recent national Under-16s and -18s championships and were chosen among 30 other talented 16- and 17-year-olds as part of the latest intake at the academy.
The trio will take up their spots at the academy's Canberra base a day after the AFL grand final where they will attend training camps in the national capital and in Melbourne and will spend time with AFL clubs to experience what it takes to play in the AFL.
The strike-rate of members graduating from the academy to AFL ranks is high, with around 70 per cent of previous members making it to the big time.
Rex moved from Hopevale in Far North Queensland to Brisbane on a Michael Voss Scholarship with AFL Queensland. A serious hamstring injury earlier this year threatened to curtail his season but he recovered and played well at the national 16s championships.
